Power Up: A Climate Reality Training on Advocacy in Action
From October 27-28 in Houston, Texas – The Climate Reality Project and former Vice President Al Gore will host the first Power Up: A Climate Reality Training on Advocacy in Action for climate activists across the US Gulf Coast.
The Gulf Coast has been targeted for continued investments in oil and gas refineries and pipelines that bring the very worst health impacts to communities of color, low-income neighborhoods, and other communities at the frontlines of the climate crisis and the racial inequity crisis.
We are coming together to say enough is enough. Communities, social justice organizations, policymakers, and businesses in the Gulf South states are embracing climate solutions that support community resilience and promise a just transition to a clean energy economy that centers equity and prioritizes people over profits.
This free two-day training provides those ready to make a difference with the tools, knowledge, and networks to mobilize their communities and drive real action for climate justice solutions.
The training gives attendees an opportunity to learn about the current state of the climate crisis in the Gulf South, to hear directly from organizations leading on the frontlines of a just and equitable transition, and to build local power to advance climate solutions. The training will also highlight the work of inspiring local leaders from regional civil rights and environmental justice groups who are mobilizing their communities to fight against polluting industries and racial injustice.

A Big Climate Deal: Lowering Costs, Creating Jobs, and Reducing Pollution with the Inflation Reduction Act
This hearing will examine how the climate investments in the Inflation Reduction Act will help lower electric and fuel bills for American families, create jobs, and expand investments in U.S. manufacturing of clean energy, clean vehicles, and climate solutions.
The committee will receive testimony from:- Josh Nassar, Legislative Director, International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace, and Agricultural Implement Workers (UAW). At UAW, Nassar leads the team responsible for implementing the union’s policy agenda, as well as designing legislative strategy on labor, trade, environment, health care, defense, energy, tax policy and other issues.
- Dr. Quinta Warren, Associate Director of Sustainability Policy, Consumer Reports. Prior to leading sustainability efforts at Consumer Reports, Dr. Warren founded Energy Research Consulting, a firm that provides technical and sustainable expertise on energy and water to entrepreneurial ventures in Africa. She also served as an AAAS fellow in the Department of Energy to manage domestic and international policy around carbon management and power generation.
- Samantha Sloan, Vice President of Global Policy, Sustainability and Marketing, First Solar, Inc. Sloan leads policy and sustainability efforts at First Solar, an American solar technology company that produces eco-efficient solar modules. Founded in 1999, First Solar has invested $2.8 billion in its three-factory Ohio footprint and will invest an additional $1.2 billion in expanding its annual U.S. manufacturing capacity to over 10 gigawatts by 2025.
